@wenotfreeyet I think it's to do with either 'politeness' or to protect you from others exploiting you, just a guess though.

@photonicfae ahh okay! yeah i think she must be worried about the latter, but im like...ive already been exploited so what does it matter?? but that makes sense ty!

@wenotfreeyet some people view sharing your income if it's decent as just asking for people to come beg you for money for every little thing. Back during my mom's mom's time (grandma's parents were immigrants), that could especially be a struggle because how can you build generational wealth for your kids and grandkids if people shame you for not giving it away let alone during lean times like economic depressions.
